Are you looking to replace your deck but are on a tight budget? We can help!
Perhaps getting a “new” deck is more feasible than you think. Due to the economic challenges this year, we have received multiple calls from clients who want to install a new deck but can’t necessarily afford to rebuild from scratch. As a result, our deck builders have refaced several decks with new decking boards and railings. I’m here today to tell you I’m thrilled with the results so far!
When I meet with a client who wants to replace their old deck with new boards, I first walk on the deck to ensure it is still sturdy. Then, I ensure the decking is pretty level. If it is relatively level, the footers have not heaved, and the ledger board is still in good shape. If I can see under the deck, I will examine the joists to ensure they remain intact. Although the damage/rot is typically on the top of the joist (due to water sitting on it), I can still evaluate it reasonably accurately.
I will look around the property, specifically at the canopy of the trees. If the sun is blocked from hitting the deck, there is a good chance that there could be water damage from the wood consistently being damp. In this case, I will remove a couple of deck boards (if screwed to the joist) and look at the top of the joist firsthand so I can accurately evaluate.

The Process
Here is what’s involved with refacing a deck:
🔨Remove all the deck boards and railing
🔨Replace any joists that need replacing
🔨Add additional blocking if required (extra strength)
🔨Install a new deck railing
When replacing the deck boards, we can replace them with Trex composite decking, cedar, or pressure-treated lumber.
There is no permit required to do this, and you will save approximately 30% to 40% off of building a deck from scratch.
